Microstructural evolution and enhanced mechanical properties of Mg–Gd–Y–Zn–Zr alloy via centrifugal casting, ring-rolling and aging

A ring-shaped Mg–8.5Gd–4Y–1Zn–0.4Zr (wt%) alloy was manufactured via centrifugal casting and ring-rolling process. The effects of accumulative reduction amount on the microstructure, texture, tensile properties were investigated. results indicate that microstructure cast consists equiaxed grains network-like eutectic structure present at grain boundaries. ring-rolled exhibits a characteristic bimodal composed fine dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) with weak basal texture coarse un-DRXed strong along presence LPSO phase. With increasing reduction, are refined formation DRXed grains. Meanwhile, precipitation Mg5RE phase occurs, generating dispersion strengthening effect. superior combination strength ductility is achieved in after an rolling 80%. this peak aging further enhanced, reaching 511 MPa, while keeping reasonable ductility. salient mechanisms identified include boundary grains, precipitated phase, short fiber lamellae/rods, nano-sized prismatic β′ precipitates γ′ precipitates.
